A mortar, fired during the Qing dynasty. It was produced at a kiln in the vicinity of the former renowned Yaozhou kilns, by this time making utilitarian wares in the Cizhou tradition. The vessel is boldly faceted into an octagonal form with a trimming tool and covered in black glaze. The lower half is left unglazed, exposing the clay body.

This practical vessel was used for grinding traditional Chinese medicines and seasonings. The interior is unglazed and the base is gently curved for use. Although a humble piece of everyday ware from a period when the memory of the great kilns had long since faded, the strong faceting creates a remarkably concise and compelling form. Its austere geometry also bears an intriguing affinity with faceted wares produced in Korea during the same period. It would make an appealing vessel when appreciated as a repurposed incense burner.

Apart from several minor chips and kiln imperfections, there are no notable defects.
