A blue and white plate, fired during the Later Lê dynasty in Đại Việt (present-day northern Vietnam). Its broad foot and moderate depth create a form somewhere between a dish and a bowl, recalling wares produced at the kilns of northern Thailand, such as Sankampaeng. The rim has been wiped of glaze for firing upside down. The well is decorated with a freely drawn orchid in fine linear strokes, while the interior walls are encircled by an arabesque design. A Rāma-style lotus-petal motif runs around the exterior.

The orchid is rendered in a fluid, almost single-stroke manner. Its spirited brushwork recalls the floral designs found on early Imari porcelain. The two kiln traditions, separated by the sea, thus seem to resonate with one another quite unexpectedly. A fine example of the distinctive charm born of ceramics shaped by maritime trade.

There is some glaze loss around the rim. Otherwise, there are no notable defects, and the overall condition is good.
