Satsuma Ware Tortoiseshell Glazed Flat Bowl

ARCHIVED

Satsuma ware flat bowl fired in the late Edo period. A rare example of an opaque streaking glaze applied on a black glaze shows a marvellous glaze scenery.

The design is similar to “tortoiseshell glaze” that follows the flow of Nagayo-sansai (three-coloured glaze). Still, the glaze method is different from the well known Hirasa’s tortoiseshell glaze, and it is considered to be a Tateno-type kiln (official kiln) from the perspective of the overall style. It has a handy shape that is ideal for the tea or sake cup as well as the Mukozuke dish.

There are no noticeable defects, and the condition is excellent. Come with a box.
