Seto Ware Ash Glazed Lipped Jar with Handle

ARCHIVED

A Koseto-type handled jar fired in Seto during the Muromachi period. This type of lipped jar is produced in various places in the Six Ancient Kilns, and those from Tokoname and Seto are called ‘Tobiguchi (kite’s beak).’ What makes this jar unique is the handle, which is a rare feature for a Tobiguchi jar. The body of the jar has acquired a tasteful amber color over the years from being used as a sake vessel, while the handle has maintained its original light green color, creating a beautiful contrast.

Despite some small glaze flakes and spots, and two repairs on the mouth, this the piece is in good condition considering its age and use. The damage on the shoulder doesn’t go through to the inside.
