Joseon Dynasty Hoeryong Ware Black Glazed Bottle
ARCHIVEDA bottle fired in Hoeryong or Myongchon County, North Hamgyong Province, during the early to mid-Joseon dynasty. The region’s pottery is characterised by coarse, light-coloured clay, but some pieces, like this one, are made with fine clay with a high iron content. They are thought to have been made before the mid-Joseon Dynasty and are generally glazed with brown, black, or sea cucumber glazes, with Gokezoko bottom. This piece is a cup-shaped mouth bottle with an impressive delicate neck and a unique black glaze with a dull lustre reminiscent of the Naeshirogawa ware in Satsuma, Japan. The potter’s finger marks on the body and the dark grits attached to the sides of the base add a rustic charm.
There is no dirt or odour inside, and it is practical. Other than kiln damage, there are no noticeable defects, and it is in excellent condition.
