Amakusa Mizunohira Ware Jar with Slip-Trailed Decoration
¥18,000 JPYA jar made in the Amakusa during the Meiji period. It is thought to be an example of Mizunohira ware, which has been continuously produced since the kiln’s establishment in 1765. The jar features a generous form with firm shoulders and a flat bottom that reveals the characteristic brick-coloured clay.
Mizunohira ware is renowned for its unique sea cucumber glaze, a technique influenced by Shodai ware, and is used to create a wide range of items, from practical utensils like urchin pots to intricately designed decorative pieces. The jar, labeled as “Kishodai” on the accompanying box, boasts an attractive yellow-brown glaze. Its style is reminiscent of Mingei folk art, similar to pieces like Tamba ware, and is highlighted by the distinctive white slip trailling decoration.
The jar is in good condition, with no noticeable defects, and comes with a storage box.
