Ryukyu Kingdom Kina Ware Unglazed Bottle

ARCHIVED

A Kina ware unglazed tokkuri (sake bottle) fired during the Ryukyu Kingdom period. It has a small, bulging body with a single ring line around the shoulder. The Kina ware located in Kina, Yotsuya Village, Nakagami County, and was the oldest operating kiln of Ryukyu pottery. This piece is called “masu bin (bottle)” for measuring awamori, and similar bottles were also fired in Chibana ware and Tsuboya ware. The deep lustre and smooth surface suggest that the bottle was used for many years, enhancing its tactile appeal. It remains functional as a sake bottle and could also be used for displaying small wildflowers.

Aside from minor kiln-related damages, such as stone chips, the bottle is in good condition with no other noticeable defects.
