Onta Ware Footed Dishes with Blue Marbling Design, Set of Two

ARCHIVED

A pair of footed dishes of Onta ware fired from the end of the Edo to Meiji periods. They were initially served as offering plates for a Buddhist altar. Each dish features a rich cobalt Suminagashi (marbling) pattern against a white-slip background on the front, while a transparent candy glaze covers the exterior, creating a refined contrast.

Onta ware was established in the early 18th century in the Onta Sarayama area, located in the mountains of Hita City, Oita Prefecture, to satisfy the local demand for household items. Due to their purpose and the delicate nature of the clay, surviving pieces are rare. These dishes reflect the distinct artistry of their time and lend themselves to versatile uses, such as serving as tall cups or dessert trays.

Although both pieces have small chips and minor glaze flakings near the rim, there are no signs of potential deterioration with actual use, and the condition is generally good.
