Gennai Ware Petal Shaped Plate with Floral Design in Relief

ARCHIVED

A Gennai ware plate fired in Sanuki Province (current Kagawa pref.) during the mid-Edo period. It features a petal-shaped form adorned with a relief floral arrangement motif on the front and flower and arabesque patterns along the rim. The unique style is based on Huanan Sancai ware, but this piece is exceptionally remarkable in its exotic taste.

Gennai ware refers to a distinctive group of Sancai pottery produced in Shido (modern-day Sanuki City, Kagawa Prefecture) and its environs during the mid-Edo period. Its origin is linked to Hiraga Gennai, who, after studying Sancai techniques in Nagasaki, introduced these methods to his hometown in 1755. His advocacy for domestic production of Chinese-style pottery, as detailed in his petition “Pottery Workbook,” laid the foundation for this unique style.

There are some bubbles in the glaze. There are no noticeable defects and the condition is excellent. It comes with a box.
