Obori Soma Ware Green Glazed Cup

ARCHIVED

An Obori-Soma ware Soba-choko cup crafted in the late Edo period. It has a slightly elongated shape and rich green glaze with a bluish tint cascading down the sides, creating an elegant and timeless aesthetic. The snake-eye foot is firmly fired, and the surface’s unique lustre and texture reflect years of careful use and appreciation.

Obori Soma ware began in the third year of Genroku (1690) in Obori-mura (current Namie-Cho), Futaba-gun, Fukushima Prefecture. The pottery industry was expanded in the area, and the fish-shaped plates and the teapot with landscape designs became popular. They were reconstructed even after the decline of the Boshin War, the Japanese Civil War (1868-69). However, many kilns were forced to evacuate outside the village due to the Great East Japan Earthquake and the nuclear accident (2011). About half of the kilns are working on rebuilding the kilns in various places.

The Kintsugi restoration was applied to minor kiln damage on the body and four small chips on the lip. Apart from that, there are no other significant defects, and the condition is generally good.
