Tamba Ware Lidded Jar with Slip Trail Lines Decoration
A Tamba ware jar fired during the end of the Edo period and the Meiji period. The Itchin slip trail technique, used to create the intricate ring and wavy line patterns, is a hallmark of Tamba ware’s decorative features of that era. These decorative elements lend the jar a modern aesthetic despite its historical origins, and its compact dimensions enhance its practical appeal. The jar’s intact lid is particularly rare, as most similar jars used as daily utensils have lost theirs over time. This piece’s design captures the spirit of its time while offering functionality that remains relevant.
The lid shows a repaired chip with a short hairline extending from it and several minor chips. The body of the jar, however, remains free from acquired defects. It comes in a box labelled “Old Tamba Itchin Jar.”
