Seto Ware Ofuke Glazed Petal-Shaped Mukozuke Dish

ARCHIVED

An Ofuke ware mukouzuke dish fired in Seto in the late Edo period. It is the form of a kabuto (samurai helmet), featuring a tiered structure and a petal-shaped rim with five notches. The Ofuke glaze extends down to the waist and within the foot, while the exposed areas are accented with iron. Same as the well-known pleated plates of the period, its sculptural form interacts dynamically with the glaze, creating tonal variations. Notable highlights include delicate pools of pale green glaze and intricate layers of crazing, enhancing its depth and character.

Minor chips are present along the rim. Two hairline cracks can be observed, though one barely reaches the reverse. Both are old imperfections that have seamlessly integrated with the piece’s patina.
