Chōsen Hoeryong Ware Gourd Shaped Bottle with Streaked Glaze
A gourd-shaped vase fired in Hoeryong County, North Hamgyong Province, during the Korea under Japanese rule. It is coated in a sea cucumber glaze and features a deep, gokezoko (recessed) foot. Inscribed beside the foot are the characters “會寧” (Hoeryong), along with “工兵聯隊記念” (Engineer Regiment Commemoration) and “贈呈” (Presentation), suggesting that this piece was made as a military commemorative item.
During the colonial period, Hoeryong ware appears to have been recognised as a regional speciality. Other examples bearing the inscription of names of hot spring resorts. The glazes used in Hoeryong ceramics at the time were reportedly imported from Japan—possibly Osaka—resulting in a glaze quality distinct from that of Joseon-period ceramics.
The condition is excellent, with no notable flaws.
