Tamba Ware Natural Ash Glazed Lipped Jar

ARCHIVED

An Old Tamba ware lipped jar fired from the late Muromachi to Azuchi–Momoyama period. The vessel features a spouted design called tobiguchi resembling a kite’s beak, and a taut, rounded body of near-spherical form. An inverted V-shaped kiln mark is incised on the side, while variegated, glassy natural ash glazes flow across the surface, lending depth and tonal richness to the clay. At the centre of the body, a contact mark remains from horizontal firing using tochin supports, suggesting an intentional kiln arrangement designed to encourage the development of abundant natural ash glaze. The work conveys the atmosphere of the medieval kiln site, and is particularly well suited for use as a flower vessel.

Kiln flaws and firing cracks are visible in places, yet these contribute to the rustic vitality and presence of the piece. The interior is clean, with no leakage, and the overall condition is excellent.
