Joseon Dynasty Hoeryong Ware Spouted Jar
A spouted jar fired in Hoeryong or Myongchon County, North Hamgyong Province, during the late Joseon dynasty. Made from coarse-grained clay and coated with a thick straw ash glaze, this jar features a uniquely shaped spout and a large, sturdy crescent-shaped foot. Similar spouted vessels, adapted from jar shapes, can also be found in the southern part of the Korean peninsula, indicating that this type of vessel was well-suited to the local climate. It is suitable for use as a sake tokkuri or a flower vase.
A similar piece is part of the Japan Folk Crafts Museum collection. Some chips are at the tip of the spout, but the cut is likely from kiln damage. Additionally, there are some glaze flakings and chips around the lip, but overall, it is in good condition.
