Goryeo Celadon Jar

ARCHIVED

A celadon jar fired during the Goryeo period. It features a wide body with a large mouth, and is covered in an uneven celadon glaze that flows down the sides, partially revealing the rough pale brown ground beneath. The exposed areas create a rugged, desolate landscape, reminiscent of rocky mountains in an open forest. While a similar vase shape was discovered on a sunken ship near Taean-gun, this jar possesses a bolder, more rustic character, highlighted by the glaze’s dramatic drips.

The matte texture around the waist reflects variations in firing conditions, and the interior shows signs of ageing. The bottom bears chips from an earlier era. The jar comes with a lacquer lid and is housed in a box.
