Mino Ware Dish with Arabesque Design in Underglaze Iron
ARCHIVEDA dish fired in Mino during the mid Edo period. It features an elegant design of arabesques and ring lines drawn with iron oxide. The Shochikubai patterns (pine tree, bamboo, and plum blossoms) are applied in the centre using a printing technique. The Janome unglazed ring mark is also coated with iron, creating a repeating ring line effect while enhancing its practicality. It is believed to have been produced at the same Mino Seianji kiln as Ofuke ware, though its exact classification remains uncertain. The piece’s style is notable for linking early Edo period Mino potteries with the Taihaku and Ishizara plates of the late Edo period.
The rim shows an old Gintsugi repair, with a few short hairlines that remain mostly within the glaze and do not extend to the back. There are also chips on the base, dating back to an earlier time.
