Tamba Ware Ash Glazed Handled Pail

ARCHIVED

An Old Tamba ware handled pail fired in the mid-Edo period. It has a handle on the cylindrical-shaped body and a rolled rim. A thick ash glaze cascades from the rim to the waist, creating a striking natural landscape pattern, with some drips extending further down. Unlike Western-style mugs that emerged later at the end of the Edo period, this piece is believed to have been spontaneously crafted as a practical utensil, possibly for scooping water. The unusual shape, combined with its earthy glaze, exudes a timeless simplicity and rustic beauty that invites its use as a vessel for flowers.

Apart from kiln damages and minor scratches from use, there are no other noticeable flaws, and it is in good condition.
