Ryukyu Kingdom Tsuboya Ware White Slip Teabowl with Blue and Yellow Decoration
ARCHIVEDA teabowl fired in Tsuboya during the end of the Edo and Meiji periods. This type of bowl is commonly known as Makai. A white slip made from crushed coral is applied to the whole body, and decorative patterns are drawn in cobalt and yellow glaze. A lustrous transparent glaze covers the entire bowl, and Janome unglazed mark remain on the well. The deep stains spreading from a hairline crack conveys the bowl’s history of careful use, embodying the Mingei (folk craft) philosophy of finding beauty in the imperfect and utilitarian.
Several hairlines extend from the rim, with chips present on both the rim and footring.
