Yuan Dynasty Cizao Ware Brown Glazed Kendi

ARCHIVED

A Kendi pouring vessel produced at a Cizao kiln during the Yuan dynasty. Characterised by its bold, elongated neck and spout, the term Kendi originates from Malay. The vessel is coated in a rich brown glaze over a white slip, resulting in a vibrant and refined colour tone.

The kendi is traditionally used as ritual purification vessels in Hinduism, and Islam, yet they were frequently produced in China for export. The Cizao kiln was situated near Quanzhou, a significant trading port often described as the starting point of the Maritime Silk Road. It was likely shipped from there to destinations of the Philippines and Indonesia and was highly revered that it served as furniture accompanying the dead to their grave. The iridescent sheen on its surface evokes a sense of timeless journeying.

Several areas exhibit glaze flaking, with minor chips on the upper neck and spout. However, no other significant defects are visible, and the vessel remains in generally good condition.
