Joseon Dynasty Hoeryong Ware Straw Ash Glazed Jar

ARCHIVED

A jar fired in Hoeryong or Myongchon County, North Hamgyong Province in the late Joseon dynasty. It forms an abacus ball shape with overhanging shoulders, and the pale, cloudy glaze extends all the way to the waist. Perhaps a white slip was applied to the clay, as the surface layer of the exposed areas is white and has peeled off in some spots. While most straw ash glazed Hoeryong ware dates to a later period, the glaze and clay texture of this piece exhibit a distinct sense of antiquity.

Aside from minor chips around the foot, the jar has no noticeable defects and is accompanied by a box.
