Satsuma Ware Genryuin Kiln Black Glazed Vase
ARCHIVEDA vase fired at the Nishimochida-type Genryuin kiln in the early Edo period. It features an elongated cylindrical body, a gently sloping neck, and two small ears. The iron glaze is applied down to the sides of the foot, and the bottom is finished with a thread cut.
The kiln was established in 1663 by the ascetic Ono Genryu, whose works are considered part of the Kochosa ware tradition, alongside the official Tateno-type kilns. This piece is a representative early example of the so-called “Kuromon” iron-glazed ware. The rustic jet-black of the vase enhances the delicate charm of accompanying flowers.
A small chip, approximately 1 cm, is visible on the foot, but the overall condition remains good, with no other significant defects.
