Takatori Ware Uchigaiso Kiln Straw Ash Glazed Jar
An old Takatori ware jar fired at the Uchigaiso kiln during the early Edo period. The jar features two incised lines around the shoulder, a straw ash glaze extending down to the waist, and a flat bottom. The Uchigaiso kiln, the official kiln of the Kuroda domain in Fukuoka, was renowned for producing both high-quality tea wares and everyday utensils, with straw ash glaze being a hallmark of its output.
This piece exhibits the distinctive pale gradation of white and soft pink tone characteristic of Uchigaiso wares, along with natural glaze shrinkage around the rim—features also seen in water jars from the same kiln. While the form is simple and weighty, the expressive glaze surface lends it a soft, refined presence.
Several hairlines are present on the rim, along with a short hairline on the side of the base that does not extend to the interior. Aside from natural kiln-related imperfections, the jar remains in good condition.
