Joseon Dynasty Blue and White Porcelain Faceted Jar

ARCHIVED

An octagonal white porcelain jar, fired in the late Joseon dynasty. The vessel has a gently rounded body faceted into eight planes, decorated with leaves and scrolling vines painted in cobalt blue. The glaze presents a soft milky-white tone, while grains of kiln sand remain adhered to the footring.

Faceted octagonal forms are sometimes understood to reflect the cosmological order of the I Ching, and were widely employed in wares ranging from official ceramics to everyday household vessels. The present work displays the restrained refinement associated with Bunwon-ri official kiln wares, yet the stains and traces of age lend it a distinctly rustic character. The quiet accumulation of time softens the formal order of the octagonal form, imparting a gentle depth to the piece.

Several minor chips, losses, and short hairline cracks are visible around the rim. A single chip can also be seen on the interior of the footring. Apart from kiln imperfections, there are no other notable defects, and the overall condition is generally good.
