Jin Dynasty Cizhou-type Ware White-Ground Black-Painted Small Bowl with Leaves Design

ARCHIVED

A small bowl with leaves design in black paintings on the white ground fired in the Cizhou-type kiln in the Jin dynasty to Yuan dynasty. The clay, which has a strong ashy taste, is covered with engobe, and Chinese characters at the centre and floral motifs around in an iron painting. The rhythmic brushwork, with a taste of Persian influence, shows the germination of later arabesque designs.

Generally in good condition, although there are a few glaze chips and stains. The lustre of the transparent glaze remains firmly intact, and this is a small bowl that would grow while using it as a sake or tea cup.
