Yuan Dynasty Cizhou-type Ware White-Ground Black-Painted Dish

¥55,000 JPY

A dish fired in a Cizhou kiln during the Yuan dynasty. It showcases the distinctive white-ground black-painted design that emerged in the Hebei region during the Jin dynasty. The dish has a slightly deep body and features the character “Spring” boldly painted in the centre, encircled by ring lines along the rim. The brushwork is fluid and powerful, embodying the innovative application of calligraphy and painting techniques to ceramics—a hallmark of Cizhou-type ware.

The black-painted design, which gained prominence during the Yuan dynasty, evolved into a major style that influenced subsequent traditions, including Japanese household Mingei ceramics like Seto ware from the Edo period. The stains inside and out enhance the piece’s character, giving it a rich patina of age and use.

There are some peeling glaze and chips on the rim. The lines that look like hairlines do not extend to the back. All scratches are thought to be due to use; there are no cracks, and the glossy glaze surface is still intact.
